Do you know the Caffarella Park in Rome ?

  • Just ouside of the city walls, between Via Appia Antica and Via Latina, two of the oldest Roman roads, lies this extraordinary public area where you can take a break walking in the green, admiring important Roman ruins and purchasing fresh cheese made in the old Vaccareccia with the milk of local sheep.

  • The Valley where the Park is located is crossed by the "holy" river Almone and hosts the rests of Roman temples, stately mansions and rich tombs. Continuously tended by farmers and cattle breeders through the ages, it was frequented in ancient times by pilgrims, soldiers and worshippers. Famous artists and travelers on their Grand Tour used to visit its ruins in the 1700's and 1800's. This painting of the so-called Egeria's Grotto was made by James Bruce of Kinnaird in 1764.
